Montreal is well known for its nightlife. And when it's free, you have absolutely no reason to miss it!
Two weeks ago, I partied until wee hours of the morning at the most fun night event throughout the year, in my opinion: 'La Nuit Blanche of Montreal'. The 15th edition took place during the night of March 1. The brand new 'Quartier des spectacles' (or arts and entertainment district) was home to this fantastic event:
But every event has its pros and its cons...
The electric side... for free!
- Access to the site is FREE, as well as a great part of the activities!
- STM (Société de Transport de Montréal) offers a shuttle service (with city guide) on different tours up to 4 AM (Even if it's mainly near the downtown, usually a ticket cost 3$ and then it's totally free!)
- The night starts around 8 PM at some places: it's a great occasion to enjoy the party for young families or people who live far away and don't want to come home too latly.
- It's usually safe everywhere, even in open Clubs
- Some places that are usually reserved (Hilton's roof pool !!!) or with limited access (many Museum) are open for a small amount of money; mostly for nothing
- An illuminated Giant Ferris Wheel and a slide made of ice (you read correctly; slide made of ice!) are set in the area for Montrealers' pleasure
- People act courteously and friendly, even more than usual; I heard some stories of people who meet their gf/bf during that night!
I was myself kindly approached, for the purpose of flirting hehehe
The less 'bright' (in 'Montréal en Lumière' Lumière means light) side
- There are, and will always be some troublemakers...
- Some places are highly (too much) condensed
- Queue for attractions such as the ice slide can take around 2 hours
- The atmosphere is very variable from one place to another, you should avoid top class restaurants if you want to celebrate and avoid public places if you want a quieter activity
- This year, many people
seem drunk were way too loud in large public places and on major streets
- If you want to take a little rest, and stop in a cafe (like I wanted to)... they will be filled too...
- If you go alone, you might feel lonely... I mean it's always more fun with friends! Even if you are very outgoing, pay attention to people that you meet
Thanks so much for reading!
I hope it was helpful.
I will soon come back to write about events, places, culture, and more. Please suggest!
